    White Plumeria

Photo of white plumeria blossoms

Beautiful and sweetly scented, plumeria is the principal flower used in the Hawaiian lei, or floral necklace. These flowers grow abundantly on trees which grow to about 6-10 meters (20-30 feet) in height. Plumeria is also known (especially in the Caribbean) as frangipani.
Plumeria cuttings are sold in many Hawaiian gift shops, sealed in plastic and guaranteed pest free for tourists to take home and attempt to grow. I have had limited success in growing them as potted house plants in Canada--they will flower in the summer, but definitely do not appreciate our winters. They also require serious pruning when they begin to touch the ceiling.
