1991 SOLAR ECLIPSE
On the morning of July 11, 1991, a total solar eclipse occurred which was visible from the
Big Island of Hawaii. Thousands of visitors (including my wife and I) flocked to the
island for a glimpse of this celestial spectacle. Unfortunately, the weather did not
cooperate and, for much of the island, the sky was overcast--if not pouring rain. This
photo was taken early that morning along highway 190 between Kailua-Kona and Waimea. Some
observers had camped overnight to claim their spot (note the tents on the left).
The view from this location was better than some, with the eclipsed sun
occasionally peeking though the clouds. (See the following photo.) But it definitely
lacked the drama of an eclipse with a clear sky. Ironically, we had left our rented condo
in Kona in the rain at 4:00 A.M. to search for a better spot, only to learn on our return
that the sky had cleared and given our neighbors an excellent view. Ç'est la vie...
