KILAUEA VOLCANO
In addition to other tourist attractions, the Big Island boasts the world's most active
volcano, Kilauea. This volcano has been erupting continuously for more than a decade. It
is also one of the world's best behaved volcanoes, pouring lava slowly into the sea
instead of exploding violently (with a few rare exceptions).
This peak is the Pu'u O'o vent along the Eastern Rift Zone of the main
volcano. This was the principal area of activity in 1991, when this photo was taken.
Inside the peak is a crater partly filled with molten lava.
More information on Kilauea and other Hawaiian volcanoes is
available from the U.S. Geological Survey.
This photograph, and several of those which follow, were taken from a
helicopter.
