HOW THE ISLANDS
GROW
This photograph was taken at the base of Kilauea, where the lava flow had crossed Chain of
Craters Road in its push to the sea. The road was obviously closed, but it was (and
probably still is) possible to drive to the edge of the lava flow. This lava was fully
cooled and ready for hiking.
In the background, a patch of trees and shrubs was spared when the lava
passed around it on both sides. The clouds of steam are the result of hot lava pouring
into the ocean further down the road, increasing the size of the island as the lava
solidifies.
