People keep taking chances with nature, building houses on flood plains, earthquake fault lines, hurricane-prone shores--and on the side of an active volcano. These houses were narrowly spared when the lava flow destroyed a small village. Fortunately, Hawaiian lava moves slowly enough to allow an orderly evaculation.
