OFF THE HANA
HIGHWAY
This lush path led to a quiet, scenic rest area off the Hana Highway on the east coast of
Maui. The Hana Highway connects the village of Hana with the rest of Maui, and is an
incredible driving experience. Carved with pick and shovel into the side of a dormant
volcano (Haleakala) in 1927, the Hana Highway has 54 named, single-lane bridges, roughly
600 hairpin turns, several dramatic waterfalls, occasional mudslides, and thousands of
squishy guavas lying in the road.
It's also one of the most scenic drives in the islands.
